STATEMENT

I am working to reexamine the things we perceive individually in our daily lives from the perspective of unity and continuity. I am interested in what transcends individuality, and how we can feel a connection even between things that each have their own claims and are incompatible with each other.

One thing that gave me a perspective was the presence of snow. In winter, snow covers the entire city of Otaru, Hokkaido, where I'm from. The people, buildings, and even nature that I usually perceive as separate coexist in a blurred world, giving me a sense of unity and relief that we're all here together. I think the "smooth harmony of a series" found in the state of snow is the origin of my aesthetic sense. It's a state in which everything is separate yet united, connected like gentle hills so that you can move freely between them.

Using this sensibility as a starting point, I engage in expressive activities that express connections that transcend individuality by aligning and perceiving each on a certain dimension, such as covering things with felt, which is a collection of fibers, or finding commonalities among objects.
