"The Drift" is an installation created for the solo exhibition "Wind Passing Through".

We often perceive ourselves as stable and autonomous individuals. Yet perhaps we are more like a drift accumulation, formed through the gradual deposit of fragments—words, ideas, and values—carried from elsewhere like the wind that continually blows in from outside.

Spread throughout the space are mounds wrapped in felt. Beneath their soft surfaces lie newspapers reporting significant historical events, slogan posters, advertisements, and other forms of media. These materials are fragments from the outside world that we have absorbed, often unconsciously, and through which our notions of truth, normality, and thought have been shaped.

Words once spoken by someone are carried by the wind, passing through time as they are inherited and transformed by others. It is at the temporary point of convergence of these accumulations that what we call “the self” emerges. This work considers the self not as an independent and fixed entity, but as a temporary landscape formed through an ongoing relationship with influences flowing in from outside.

Visitors enter the space surrounded by felt-covered mounds and move among them. Within this environment, the interior self no longer appears as a closed and self-contained domain, but as something shaped through the accumulation of countless words, values, and fragments of memory received from the outside world. Moving through the landscape of felt invites visitors to physically sense that they, too, are part of such an accumulation—a landscape continuously formed through layers of external influences.
